Final Reflection

This is my final project for Life Drawing 1
As you can see it is a Portrait of myself drawn with contour lines.
Overall I'm pretty happy with it, I know its not perfect but I feel
I have improved since my previous portraits in the past.

This semester I have seen what it takes to draw structurally to achieve a certain form. The more I draw the more I start to notice planes and how the lines create space within my work. I believe this class has really opened my eyes to how things should be drawn correctly. I feel I have achieved success in just understanding different approaches to take when drawing something three dimensional. I can definitely see this paying off when drawing out product designs in the near future.

The learning of the human body's anatomy was also a cool part about this class. It really made sense when we started to draw the separate parts at first when it came time to draw the whole picture in the end. The live models were also a great bonus to use during class. I was great to see the person right there and learn how to capture their image on paper.

The set of skills I acquired in this class are many. My art of mark making skills has improved in my drawings. I am a heavy handed person. I like to see thick outlines on objects and figures, but i continued to learn to see the true beauty of things when the line weight has a light feel to them. My lines as of right now are still heavy but have been getting skinnier and lighter throughout the past few weeks. I have noticed my lines have change a lot during the quick sketches of the models that we have been doing throughout the semester.

Since the mid term I have continued to learn more patience and to slow down my drawing. I have been putting the line down correctly more times at first instead of scribble it down and search for the right one. My forms and proportions have been quite better due to I now know what I'm looking for to achieve three dimensional objects on paper. Such things as looking for certain muscle groups or spinal shape of the models has improved my overall drawing greatly.

With my chosen field of Industrial Design, I believe i can greatly benefit in the future from taking this class. I can now freely sketch items quickly for concepts and ideations with confidence. I also have the knowledge of creating the human form for use of applying ergonomics to products and structures for use by humans. The overall time spent sketching in class has reopened my passion for sketching and drawing. I want to design for the greater good of mankind. I think knowing how the human body is built and having the knowledge of how to draw it correctly and integrate it in my designs, will greatly pay off for me in the future.

Last day in Class drawing

On our last day in Life drawing class we had a model to draw.
While drawing this model I wanted to capture an image I could use foreshortening in.
I have a hard time at angles that require foreshortening so I went with the ones you see here.

Life Drawing Skulls Assignment

Here are my skull drawings for the class assignment.
I really enjoyed learning how to draw these and want to keep practicing and keep up at it and get good!

Some Scribbling thinking about my Portrait

I was drawing and sketching and came up with this last night while i was bored working on some other homework. Thought id share!

artist that have

Artists that have influenced me or have caught my eye for awhile have been M.C. Escher due to the complexity of his work and skills, Keith haring due to the crazy little men and glowing babies drawn in subway tunnels, Shepard Fairly for amazing stencil and graffiti work, also Banksey for more amazing stencil work, Ansel Adams for awesome scenic old school photography and Im sure there is many more but this is off the top of my head as of now that i enjoy viewing over and over again.

Right now

Right now im in the middle of molding game pieces for my Design Theory and Methods class.
I had created them in the first place in the program solidworks and then had them rapid prototyped or 3d printed.
It took almost 6 hours to get 4 game pieces printed out. My problem was i needed atleast 30 of each piece for the game.
So i decided to start casting them and mold them out of polyester resin. I have close to thirty hours put into these pieces with the amount of design time, making molds, failing at making molds, spilling resin, and waiting for dry times close to 2 hrs a set. So this has totally ingulfed my life since last week after i got the 3d prints back.

Ink wash/shell drawing

Here I drew a shell and added a ink wash to it. If i were to do it again, i would draw it alot larger and go more intense with the ink and make an overall composition out of it.

This week eyeballs

This week we started to draw eyeballs and noses of the face. I found it quite difficult to accuratly draw an eyeball. The nose was also pretty hard and awkward to draw.

Drawing Skulls

So last week we started learning how to draw skulls. I enjoyed seeing ways how to draw and develop 3d resemblance of a skull using contour lines and structure.

Mid Portfolio

This year so far i've learn patience to fully understand what it takes to be a great artist. Ive witnessed myself turn into many shades of gray learning how to draw successful. The form and porpotions are slowly coming together to produce an image that is somewhat worth re-seeing at a future date. Overall I'm pleased with most of my accomplishments regarding the shape and features of our objects we draw in class.
I would like to learn more measuring techniques and also more drawing pointers. Due to the nervousness of drawing correctly at certain angles and views of the models or also our shells.
I can see myself more enhanced in the way i draw during other classes now after taking this drawing class.I'm a bit more relaxed and easy flowing with the pen when drawing out ideas on paper.

Field trip write up

We went last wednesday on a field trip to the walker art center and the bell museum
The installation at the walker art center i found the most interesting was a film and framed papers by Marcel Broodthaers.
I wrote down one of his writings so i could remember it.
"Writing is not ment to be read
it is rather to be seen
in other words to be
witness as writing
still I have to write
in order to hide writing
It is crucial to write
yet my writing can't be read.
The reason why writing disappears
is not because the rain washes
away my letters because its filmed"
M.B.

Marcel Broodthaers
La pluie (Projet pour un texte)
BE, 1969, 16 mm, b/w, sound, 3’
Broodthaers is filmed in his back garden, while absorded in the process of writing. Equipped with paper, ink and a feather pen he begins to scribble when it starts to rain. The text is constantly erased, but the artist doesn’t seem to mind. A melancholic and allegoric reflection on artistic production, authorship and cinema, that particular medium which constantly doubts between stasis and movement, between writing and erasing.-Iris Balija

I liked the way it was filmed. He tried so hard to keep writing in the rain but his writings showed nothing due to the washing away effect of the water. He does it over and over with different letters and then frames them to show the mess he created.

My shell is called a tulip snail, or Tulip shell is the common name for two or three species of large, predatory, subtropical and tropical sea snails from the Western Atlantic. These species are in the genus Fasciolaria. They are marine gastropod mollusks in the family Fasciolariidae, the spindle shells, tulip shells and their allies.

The shell is found normallly on the north carolina coast and also the gulf coast of texas, It is also found in the west indis and brazil. The shell has a fusiform outline with a smooth surface and shows fine growth lines. It is mostly white to tan in color and has rows of darker brownish blotchs all over. The shell of an adult tulip snail can be from 2.5" to 9.5" long. My shell is 5.5" long

The week of February 1st

During the week we did contour line drawings of a model. we started out drawing 30 sec gestures which would change every 30 sec. Then we went to minute long poses. I felt a little lost at first but once i warmed up, i felt a lot more comfortable and the charcoal starting flowing out some decent drawings. We eventually started doing 30 min drawings which included cross sectioning of the human body. We started out by finding the center (spine) and working are way out to a contour drawing then we included up to 4 cross contour lines to show the flow of the body across the drawing. Overall this week went just fine!

Blind Contour drawing

My process was quite plain and simple. Start with the models head and work my way down. I was focusing on how the models arm laid across her body and my marks tend to show that as i repeated them over a couple of times.
My drawing in three words=sketchy, hurried, and dark

Here is some of my recent artwork

INTRODUCTION

Hi,
My Name is Cory Roehl and I'm currently a student studying industrial design at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
I have a passion for design, machining, fabrication, technology and automobiles.
I have 3 years of work experience as a application/design engineer for CNC Solutions LLC in Watertown, WI www.cncsolutionsllc.com
CNC Solutions LLC is an Automation design company which engineers and integrates automation setups with CNC Machines for a wide variety of businesses throughout the midwest.
There I did a broad range of work. I would take a problem or idea from a job and come up with a solution, design components and various other parts using Solidworks and Autocad. I would then produce part prints for fabrication and machining. I also Machined most of the components we developed or engineered using lathes, mills and CNC machines. I would then travel to customers and install these components inside of CNC Machines and automation cells.
I have experience alot of different areas of expertise with engineering, fabrication, machining, installation, customer service and all aspects of running a business.

I have a passion for automobiles. I recently restored a 1980 CJ7 Jeep from the ground up. I did a frame off restoration and almost removed every bolt in the entire vehicle to replace parts and add upgrades.
Here is the finish product

Now I'm here at UW-Stout to become an Industrial Designer to pursue my dream of creating products.
Im in my Junior year after returning back to school a year and a half ago.
I love being in art classes and having the option of being creative and a problem solver.
Im currently taking classes in Art history, pschology, Design theory and Methods, and Life Drawing 1.
I look forward to Life drawing to expand my horizons to more organic shapes and get away from the squared up engineered mind of drawing geometric shapes.
